A five axis machine adds two rotary axes to the usual three linear ones, so the cutter can approach the part from almost any direction. That does two quite different things: it removes setups, and it lets the tool be tilted to reach or to cut better. Understanding which of those your part needs is what decides whether five axis machining saves you money or spends it.

Positional five axis: the setup saving

Here the rotary axes index the part to a new orientation and then hold it while three axis cutting happens. Features on five faces are machined in one clamping, so there is no re fixturing, no repositioning error and no second setup cost. For a prismatic part with features all round, this alone often justifies the machine, and it is the commonest way five axis capacity is actually used.

Simultaneous five axis: reach and finish

Here all five axes move together during the cut, so the tool can be tilted continuously to follow a surface. That allows a shorter, stiffer tool to reach into deep cavities, keeps the cutting edge at a favourable angle on curved surfaces, and produces better finishes on impellers, blades and moulds. It needs more capable software and more skilled programming.

What it costs

Machine hour rates are higher, programming takes longer, and fixturing must give the rotary axes clearance to move without collision. Setup on the machine is more involved. So a simple plate with holes on one face costs more on a five axis machine than on a three axis one, and there is no benefit to offset it.

Choosing between them

Count the faces that carry features. One or two faces is three axis work. Three or more usually favours positional five axis because the setups disappear. Curved surfaces, deep cavities and undercut geometry point at simultaneous five axis. And if the part is a one off, ask the shop, because their answer will be shaped by what is free on the floor this week.
