A machine shop sells capacity, capability and accountability, and the quote it returns bundles all three into one number. Comparing two shops on that number alone is how buyers end up paying twice: once for the cheap parts and again for the ones that had to be remade. A short list of questions makes the comparison meaningful.
What is inside a machining quote
Programming and setup, charged once. Cycle time per part. Material, usually at cost plus a handling margin. Any secondary operations such as heat treatment, plating or grinding, often subcontracted. Inspection, which may or may not be included. And a margin. Ask for the split and the first four become visible, which is what lets you see where a design change would land.
Capability that actually matters
Machine envelope and axis count relative to your part. Whether programming is in house, because that decides how quickly a change is absorbed. What inspection equipment sits on the floor and whether it is calibrated. Whether they hold material or buy it per job, which decides lead time. And what they do regularly, since a shop that runs your kind of part every week will beat one learning it.
The questions worth asking
Which feature on this drawing is driving the price. What would you change to make it cheaper. What is the lead time from a clean purchase order rather than from today. What happens if a part is out of tolerance. And who will I speak to if there is a problem. A shop that answers all five well is worth a premium over one that answers none.
Getting comparable quotes
Send every shop the same package: model, drawing, quantity, material specification, finish, inspection requirement and required date. Ask for prices at more than one quantity. Ask what is excluded. Differences that remain after that are real differences in capability or in how busy the shop is, and both are useful information.
