Subtractive manufacturing starts with a solid piece of material and removes everything that is not the part. It covers milling, turning, drilling, grinding, sawing, electrical discharge machining and waterjet cutting, and it remains the dominant way precision metal parts are made, for reasons that have very little to do with technological fashion.

The three families

Subtractive removes material. Additive adds it layer by layer. Formative deforms material into shape without changing its mass, which covers moulding, casting, forging, stamping and extrusion. Every manufacturing process is one of these three, and the comparison between them is really a comparison of where the cost sits: in material, in time, or in tooling.

What subtractive is unbeatable at

Tolerance and surface finish, because a cutting edge under numerical control is extraordinarily precise. Material properties, because you start with certified wrought stock whose behaviour is known. Availability, since machine shops exist everywhere. And low volumes, because there is no tooling: a single part costs the setup and the cutting time and nothing more.

Its inherent limits

Material waste, since everything that is not the part becomes chips, which matters enormously with expensive alloys. Tool access, because a cutter has to physically reach every surface, which forbids internal channels and enclosed cavities. Setups, because features on many faces need re fixturing. And time, since removing a lot of material takes a long time.

Choosing between the three

Formative wins on volume, because tooling amortises and cycle times are short. Subtractive wins on precision, on certified material and on low volume. Additive wins where geometry is impossible otherwise, where an assembly can be consolidated, or where the material is expensive enough that waste dominates. Most real products use all three in different components.
