Each simplification trades cycle time or life for lead time, and together they typically compress a tooling programme from months into weeks.

Where the part fills and where it does not. Where the weld lines land. How much it warps and in which direction. Which dimensions move and by how much. What the real cycle time is likely to be. All of that is what makes the production tool right at first sampling, and a production tool that samples right first time saves more than the prototype tool cost.

Planning the handover

Decide up front whether the prototype tool is disposable or is expected to bridge production, because that changes the steel and the cooling. Keep it available until the production tool is qualified. And write down what was learned, because the value is in the knowledge transfer and it evaporates if it lives only in the toolmaker's head.
